All surfaces must be clean, dry and free of grease, oil, paint etc. If mold or mildew are present, kill and remove by cleaning with a solution of 1 part household bleach to 3 parts water. Always do a test area in an inconspicuous spot for adhesion and compatability.
Bare concrete must cure for 45 days. All horizontal concrete must be etched with H&C Etching Solution, follow the label instructions. For highly troweled surfaces (little porosity - very smooth), use H&C Etching Solution at full strength, do not dilute.
Repair: for the best waterproofing protection on vertical concrete and masonry, patch and repair cracks and crevices where water can enter. On horizontal surfaces, use appropriate patching material. However patching compounds will be visible through a clear coating (unless putting H&C Concrete Sealer Solid Color, Solvent-based down first, that will hide patches).
Be sure to apply under very dry conditions only. Applying to a damp surface may cause haziness or loss of adhesion. Air AND surface temperature should be between 50° and 90°F for at least 24 hours after application. No rain should be expected for at least 12 hours after application. For best results, wait 24 hours after rinsing/prepping the surface.
It's a good idea to stir the sealer slowly and thoroughly before and during the application. Do not shake it, avoid "whipping" air into the sealer as well. For damp or inclined areas that tend to get slippery, or where traction is important, add H&C SharkGrip™ Slip Resistant Additive to your sealer. Do not thin this product.
First Coat: If your surface has corners or edges, coat those with your brush first to ensure complete coverage of the sealer. Using your roller, evenly apply the first coat to the rest of your surface, working in one direction. Let it dry for at least 4 hours before applying the second coat. Be careful not to overwork the product. If the coating has partially dried, overworking it could cause it to lift from the surface.
Second Coat: For best coverage, use your roller and apply the second coat in the opposite direction of the first coat. Two coats of H&C® Concrete Sealer Clear Gloss, oil-based are sufficient. For application over H & C® Concrete Sealer Solid Color Solvent-based: Using your roller, evenly apply one coat over the entire surface, working in one direction. One coat is sufficient.
